    Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a weight limit for participating in a cave tubing cruise shore excursion in Belize?
Suggested maximum weight is 360 pounds for cave tubing.
How many caves do you visit on your Belize cave tubing excursions?
You will visit 3 caves. One dry cave and 2 wet caves.
What is the water temperature on the cave tube excursion?
The water is refreshing, around 70 to 74 degrees, and it stays about the same year-round. It is a great refreshment when you have been hiking on a warm day.
I'm sort of claustrophobic. Can I participate in the cave tubing excursion in Belize?
Yes, you can! First, if you like, you can keep your lights on and keep moving while going through a cave. Just let your guide know how you feel and you will be assisted with pleasure.
I am not good at walking for a long time, is this excursion right for me?
There is quite a bit of walking at the ruins (it is not wheelchair suitable!) and the entrance to the river for tubing is about a 25-minute walk from the base camp.
I cannot swim. Can I still do cave tubing?
Yes, cave tubing does not require swimming, unless you want to. Being an inexperienced swimmer is also not a problem. You will get on your tube in shallow water and you ride in the tube the entire time of the excursion. You will also be wearing a life jacket for safety and comfort. If you inform your guide that you cannot swim, he can assure you feel safe during the excursion.
What is the travel time to the cave tubing site?
It is about 45 to 60 minutes from the pier depending on traffic.
Do I need to take my passport with me on the Belize Altun Ha Mayan Ruins, Sightseeing, and Cave Tubing Excursion to show with my Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket?
No, it is not necessary to take along your passport unless noted by your cruise line or listed in the Restrictions or Notes tab for the excursion. Your local operator has your booking noted. Please arrive with a printed copy of your eticket or digital copy if applicable.

This is a must see!! Made our trip. We started the day at the ruins, our guides Dario and Charles took us for the 1 hour ride, kept the conversation going and gave us information and history of Belize. Once at the ruins we took a walking tour of the site, Dario was a wealth of knowledge and knew the history very well. We then returned to the road taking the ride to the cave tubing location. Lunch was grabbed on the way but very enjoyable, a local chicken and rice dish. We arrived at the rain forest location and grabbed our life jackets and helmets. We took a moderate hike through the rain forest with 3 river crossings. This excursion was different then others that were also there in that we did not have to carry our own tubes along the hike. We then entered the water and tubed into the cave which was a really cool experience. We tubed a little further through the forest and then swam a bit before heading back to the vehicle. This excursion is great in that you get to see two awesome places. Our ship time made us a little pressed for time. Dario and Charles kept us moving without ever making us feel rushed. They got us back in plenty of time with memories that will last a life time!!

Four of us took the Altun Ha ruins and Cabe Tubing tour with Melvin. The entire process was so simple, from start to finish. ShoreExcursioneer does a GREAT job providing all the information and instructions to ensure that your entire excursion is clear. After tendering into Belize, we met up with Melvin and it was our group of 4. Melvin was awesome, such a great guy and he was super funny. Gave us a lot of great information on Belize and made our day so enjoyable. Trust me on this, the drive to the ruins is not something you want to do in a bus filled with 60 other people! It's much more enjoyable using a company like ShoreExcursioneer that has smaller groups for their tours. You can get so much more out of the excursions (history, questions, etc) this way as well. After visiting the ruins, we grabbed a nice lunch and were on our way to the cave tubing place. That was the highlight of the day for me, it was absolutely amazing in the caves! Once again, Melvin did a great job with the history of the area and caves. He also made sure we were back at the pier in plenty of time to catch our tender. I highly recommend this tour company and Melvin!

Each one of our family members loved this excursion. Our guide, Luis, was amazing!! He was so knowledgable about Belize. He had everything planned out perfectly. The cave tubing was so much fun. We saw the rain forest on our walk up to the start of our cave tubing. He had our tubes waiting for us so we didn't have to carry them on our walk to where we began tubing. After tubing, a delicious Belizean lunch was ready and we headed to the ruins. The ruins were great. Luis made this experience so worthwhile. We are so grateful for this opportunity and would highly recommend it!

Mr. T was a great tour guide. Super knowledgable and entertaining. There is a lot of driving but we were able to do and see what we wanted to do and see the country side of Belize. If booking be sure to be the first tender off the ship.

Our favorite was tubing through underground caves and seeing the baby bats. Our guide was amazing in driving us and having ALL our tubes brought to our site so that we didn't have to carry them. The streams we had to cross getting to the caves themselves were a bit rough. I would not advise people with weak coordination, fear of water or bad physical health to try this trip. It was a bit challenging for me and I'm in excellent health, mid-60's. Overall we ALL enjoyed ourselves.

We went cave tubing and saw mayan ruins with my boyfriend and his family. There is a little bit of a hike to the caves, that includes a bit of high water wading. His mom has some mobility issues and our guide Carlos literally drug her with a tube across the river. Saw amazing beautiful part of Belize. We got to see everything even though she went a little slower. Didn’t spend too long at ruins but that was okay. Carlos was great. Highly recommend. Thanks Carlos!!!!

We loved the cave tubing and the ruins however we felt very rushed through it all. We only got to spend about 25 minutes at the ruins and went very fast through the cave. I would recommend doing one or the other but not both.

Louis was wonderful. He was very proud of Belize and knew everything about anything we asked. He worked really hard to make our experience great and we had great local food with him and made it back to the ship with time to spare. Really glad that we decided to do both tours in the same day as he was a great tour guide. Would love to take another tour with Louis and experience more of Belize.

The excursion was amazing! We really enjoyed tubing through the caves. It rained and that only made it better! The ruins were beautiful. Well worth the trip. Our trip got off to a late start which made a lot of our trip quite rushed. Our guide was polite, answered our questions, but didn't really offer much more than was asked of him, which was kind of disappointing. Overall, we got to see and do what we wanted to and that was wonderful!

Our tour guide was wonderful! Get ready to experience tons of driving but worth the drive! The drives are about an hour long to get to the river tubing. Our tour guide drove, pulled us in the river and gave the tour, we ate with him, and he drove us to the Mayan ruins which took about an hour and gave us history on it. He let us decide that we wanted to cut the tour 15 minutes short so that we could buy from souvenirs from the locals since it was hand made and you can bargain. BARGAIN! Don't buy anything in the ports! Buy stuff that the locals have made and try to haggle with them. They will most likely take it. Make sure you tip your tour guides! Not only (do they work) extremely hard to please you so please always leave a tip in their hand at the end of the day! I cannot remember our guide's name. He did not have it on his card that he gave us. I want to say maybe Roberto? He was a great guy and guide either way and we appreciate all of his work! Thank you!

So to start off, be aware that Belize is a tender port. Our ship was dealing with rough waters that morning, so we were only able to tender half the amount of passengers. We actually didn't step foot on Belize until 2 hours after we arrived in the local waters. Once we were there, it was relatively easy to find our tour guide. We met up with him just outside of the cruise terminal. Our group was supposed to be 4 people, but by the time we got there, the other 2 people had not shown up. We couldn't wait any longer because we got to port so late, so Jeff had a friend wait at the pier in case the other couple showed up. We decided since we got there so late, that we wouldn't have time to do everything for this tour. My wife and I really wanted to see the ruins, so we decided to drop the cave tubing portion of the excursion. Jeff then suggested that we go do a little driving around with him after the ruins. We headed out to the Altun Ha ruins side which was a decent drive away. On the way, he shared his knowledge of the local culture and pointed out anything interesting on the way. Jeff was an amazing tour guide for us, very personable and easy to talk to. He had lived in the US for a number of years, so he was able to engage with us about our culture and life in the US. After we toured the ruins, Jeff got us some lunch right there at the site which doesn't normally service large tour groups. It was an amazing authentic lunch. Just watch out for the spices if you're not used to hot things. After we finished with the ruins, Jeff took us all throughout Belize City and the surrounding countryside and showed us things most tour groups would never see. It was such an awesome experience seeing the country through not just a tour operator, but someone who genuinely loves his country and is trying to bring a better future. Jeff is really one amazing man, and anyone would be extremely lucky to get him as their tour guide. I was a little nervous about getting back to the pier on time at the beginning of the excursion, but Jeff quickly set me at ease about our time frame. He had us back to the pier with plenty of time to spare. Overall, this was an experience I know my wife and I will never forget. Highly recommended to book through this company.

The entire excursion was very enjoyable. Our first top was Cave tubing. You (can) carry your own tube, helmut, and life vest for the 15min walk. Make sure you have good water shoes, because that walk is on rocks. The guide pulls you through the cave. It was very enjoyable! Please don't forget your bug spray..you will definitely need it along the walk. Guide was easy to find and very nice. Directions were easy to follow.

We had 3 great adventures on our recent cruise, but Belize was by far the best! Our tour guides made sure of that. They were very gracious to myself and my family. They went out of their way to see that they made the most of our limited time in his country. What a wealth of knowledge they are. From Mayan history and culture to edible jungle plants which we sampled extensively during our trek to the river (including some very tasty termites ) . It was great to see our kids (who are very modern tech driven kids) in awe and thoroughly immersed in learning about other cultures and visibly moved while standing atop ancient Mayan temples. The cave tubing was as fascinating as it was relaxing. An unexpected and welcome treat was the lunch at a little rural restaurant. The owners couldn't have been more kind. The food was one of the highlights of our trip. Rice and peas with stewed chicken and a house made habanero salsa. I've had this dish in other countries, but never executed this well. Excellent!!! Our guide heard us discussing some of the local treats we had sampled from vendors at the ruins and said if we wanted to shop that he would make time to stop by a local general store. We were definitely game for that and left with bags of local treats, that cost us next to nothing. He knew the way to a bunch of Louisianans hearts, right through our stomachs. I don't have enough adjectives to convey what a great time we had. I'll just say that our guides are fine stewards of their country and made all of us wish we could spend more time discovering the people, culture, sights and adventures of Belize. Thank you gentlemen. Sincerely, Brian K. Pinsonat Kristin Anthony Alyssa

This was hands down one of the best excursions I went on during my cruise. From reading other reviews I expected about a hour + drive each way to do the caving and ruins. The guide was informative, and knew a lot of history and culture of the area. The cave tubing was beautiful and had a lot more history than I expected - though it required a bit of walking (just remember to bring water shoes or you can buy them there for $3). The ruins were more impressive than I thought. You do get to climb one of the main ruins (and boy is it a climb), it is not for those who have difficulty walking or are scared of heights. Overall it was very enjoyable. Don't expect to do much shopping if any at this port - it is adventure packed day to get you back just in time to take one of the last boats back to the ship!

We took this excursion July 22, 2014 and it was phenomenal! Our family of 5 (ages 17, 18, 21, 43, 44) ended up with our own private tour for the day. We were on the Carnival Legend, and as a previous reviewer mentioned, get on the 1st tender off the ship because this tour covers a lot of ground. The only negative...lots of driving time! I loved being in the van and seeing the "real" Belize, but my husband was not a fan of all of the driving involved in the excursion. We went to Altun Ha first. Our guide, Leo, was one of the most knowledgeable guides we've ever had and absolutely MADE this trip. We were fortunate in that there was only one cruise ship (ours) in port that day and we were the first group to make it Altun Ha, so we had the entire ruins to ourselves. Leo spent the entire drive (45-50 minutes) giving us background and history of not just Altun Ha, but of all of the Mayan civilizations in the Yucatan and information about Belize. The amount of time at the ruins is very limited, so if that is your main interest, I would suggest a different excursion. It was perfect for me! By the time I got hot and sweaty and slightly tired from climbing up and down, we were done. My Mayan history buff husband would have liked more time there! After a VERY BRIEF shopping stint at the end (we got fresh coconut water and sugar cane to chew on) we were off again...headed for the caves! The trip to the caves from Altun Ha takes a long time...at least another hour or more. Again, if you enjoy seeing the country without being the driver, it's pleasant, however there is not as much to see while cutting through the interior. My kids slept for much of it! :) We made a quick stop at the outfitters base, paid the balance on our excursion and rented some water shoes ($3 USD/each.) Our guide suggested we get the Crocs and it was a great suggestion! The small rocks on the trail to the caves are a bit rough and I can imagine they would be painful in regular water shoes! Once we got to the caves, we were outfitted with helmets (with lights,) and life jackets. ***We did NOT have to carry our tubes...and all of the other tour groups we saw did have to!*** The hike through the jungle to get to the caves was awesome!! Leo stopped at numerous plants, trees, bushes, animals, insects, etc to point them out and explain their nutritional or medicinal value and even showed us some that we could taste. We chewed some leaves/stems that were very refreshing (like a lime) and even tasted some termites (minty!) Once we got to the cave, we were given our tubes and Leo hooked them all together. The water was chilly, but beautiful! The float through the cave was interesting and Leo continued to provide a history of Mayan beliefs regarding the caves and to point out the interesting features and he also hauled us through the shallow parts of the river. All of the other excursions end once you exit the cave, ours however, continued for another 1/2 mile or so down river. Doesn't seem like much, but it was fantastic!! We had the opportunity to get out of the tubes and swim or walk in some incredibly beautiful spots of clear, blue water!! We did have to carry our tubes out, but it wasn't very far and not bad at all. Once we dried off and changed clothes we headed back to the operator's base where we enjoyed a traditional Belizean lunch of chicken, rice and beans, and coleslaw. All but our picky eater really enjoyed the meal and had seconds! They also provided Rum Punch, which was really good. The owner of the company came and met with us to ensure we'd had a great experience (he was also there checking on things when they handed out our tubing equipment!) We then loaded up for the drive back to the ship...another 40 minutes! We made it with 7 minutes to spare before the last posted tender time. In all actuality, there were 2 tenders behind us! Overall, though it was rushed, this was an amazing adventure!!

My family was completely thrilled by this excursion. Previous reviews raved about the knowledge and abilities of their tour guides. Our guide was no exception. Carlos Manuel put his heart and soul into our excursion for 7 hours to make it a memorable success for us. He guided us both through the Belize caves and the Mayan ruins, carried on a one on one conversation with my 9 year old son during one of our drives, and had a wonderful wealth of knowledge that kept us engaged and impressed. The excursion local operator came to us at lunch to make sure we were pleased and to make sure we stayed on schedule. (2nds from lunch, bottled water, and a bit of rum punch for dad were packed up for our drive to the Mayan ruins to keep us on-time.) A few things to keep in mind if you select this excursion. We were moving the entire time. Activity level of 'Moderate' should be taken seriously. Make sure you are on the first tender off your cruise ship so you have time to enjoy this excursion. Finally, due to time to tender into port, I would be hesitant to select this excursion if the port call was less than 7.5 - 8 hours. Our ship's 'first' tender for excursions not booked through the cruise line didn't reach shore until 50 minutes after our arrival time. A shorter port call would still find our family enjoying the Cave Tubing or the Tubing and Zipline. We were very happy with our excursion.
