Adventure seekers will enjoy this unique hike. El Caminito del Rey was once considered a dangerous trek due to its state of disrepair and stark location. Today the entire route has been carefully restored, earning it the Europa Nostra Award for heritage conservation, and although it's now much safer, one thing hasn't changed - the unique experience of strolling along the walkway along the cliff face. Take one of the best selfies ever, as you'll never forget the views!
You will take a taxi to the meeting point close to your Malaga cruise ship pier (taxi cost is not included, approximately 20-30 minutes). Your expert, English-speaking guide will meet you at a centralized location where you will board comfortable, air-conditioned transportation for the short 1-hour drive from Malaga to Caminito del Rey (The King's Little Pathway). Once you have arrived at the Natural Area of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, your guide will share the history of this unique natural wonder. Completed in 1905, the walkway was built for hydroelectric dam workers that connect the 2 power plants at Chorro Falls and Galanejo Falls. The dam serves as the main water reserve for the province of Malaga, while the gorge below is a canyon carved by the River Guadalhorce.
You will be provided a safety helmet before the hike begins as there are many low overhangs. What was once a bare, open narrow path is now a nice, 3-foot wide walkway equipped with handrails/wires. The path you will explore, first opened by King Alfonso XIII, is about two miles (3 km) long, about 3 feet (1 meter) wide, and hangs about 320 feet (100m) above the river below. In many places, you can still see the remnants of the original rickety path situated several feet below the new walkway.
The panoramic view of this natural canyon will captivate you. After being closed for 15 years due to deterioration, the much-anticipated reopening took place in March 2015 and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Today the hike is a very safe experience and welcomes anyone over the age of 8 provided there is no fear of heights! The estimated time for your journey high above the river is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, making comfortable clothing and sunblock an absolute must.
Upon completion of the trek and full of adrenaline, enjoy a relaxing drive back to Malaga to the meeting point where you can return to your Malaga cruise terminal at your leisure. Please allow 8 hours for the excursion duration plus additional time to return to the pier.
