You will see the best of Lisbon on this informative and entertaining walking excursion. History, Culture, and Art collide as you visit three districts: Baixa, Chiado, and Alfama.
After a short taxi ride from your Lisbon cruise terminal, you will start on the right foot at the most popular meeting spot in all of Lisbon, the Square of Dom Pedro IV. Here you will meet your knowledgeable and friendly guide, who will lead you out on an easy-paced walk to see the best of Lisbon!
You will walk and experience the sites of Rossio Square - the main square that is the heart of both old and new Lisbon dating back to the Middle Ages. Your guide will tell you how the city was virtually destroyed in the 18th century and rebuilt to become the modern booming city it is today.
You will learn about the local favorite liqueur of many Portuguese, Ginjinha.
Walking through Restauradores Square, you will take a look at the Obelisk which commemorates the Restorations of Portugal's independence from Spain in 1640. You will also have a look at the intricate Neo-Manueline architecture of the RossioCentral Station in Rossio Square.
As you pass through Carmo Square, you will learn about the Carnation Revolution of 1974. This was the modern-day military leadership takeover there were virtually no shots fired. Red carnations were put on the muzzle of the guns and soldiers' lapels.
Next up is the elegant Chiado neighborhood. It is a traditional shopping area for visitors and locals alike. Cafes, shops, bars, theaters, restaurants, bookshops, and museums abound in this cosmopolitan section of the city. Keep your eyes open for beautiful facades on the buildings! You will also get to taste the most delectable treat, Pastel de Nata. This is a type of custard tart that is a typical local dish.
Your guide will then take you to the neighborhood of Alfama. Ancient houses and narrow cobblestone streets make it obvious that you have stepped into one of the oldest districts in Lisbon with its Moorish influence. You will also learn about Fado, Portugal's musical genre as you pass the Fado Museum and many of Alfama's hidden, small Fado restaurants. Your guide will lead you through the winding streets to a wine bar. Refresh yourself with a glass of local wine and enjoy a delicious tapa of Chourico and cheese that is included.
After your refreshments, your walking excursion comes to an end in "Commerce Square", where you will see Lisbon's Cathedral which is the city's oldest church built in 1147!
