You'll start your adventure by meeting knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides just an 8-minute taxi ride from your Barbados cruise ship dock. Once you get checked in your guide will lead the group on the way as you stroll the streets of Bridgetown for a great combo of sightseeing and delicious food. As you pass interesting sights and highlights, the guide will be giving you facts, stories, and tales along the way. Get your camera ready for Montefiore Fountain, no longer a fountain but a marble monument built with each of its statues representing different ideals of Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, and Prudence.
As you continue walking, you'll see the oldest synagogue in the Caribbean, restored in the 1800s after a hurricane, built of sand-colored coral stone and mortar and surrounded by the centuries-old graves of Jewish settlers. The Parliament buildings are in the heart of the city and consist of two neo-Gothic style buildings. Another photo opportunity is at the statue of Lord Nelson, who visited in 1805 and who the locals revered for his fight against the French. Pass the Chamberlain Bridge over the Careenage River, newly restored from a swing bridge to a decorative lift bridge that allows pleasure craft to pass through the inlet channel.
As you make your way through the city and in between the sites, you'll be treated to many tasty delights. There are stops at different locations with different samplings at each including Hunter's Bar, Square Restaurant, City Bar, Marina Bar, and Restaurant. The tastings include Bajan cuisine and local beverages. You'll have bite-size or small plate samplings of cou cou - an interesting item that's an integral part of many national dishes somewhat like polenta or grits; souse - a local pork favorite that can be hot, mild, or no pepper at all; ham cutters - thickly slices portions of ham; fried plantains – a starchy vegetable that's a substitute for potatoes; and flying fish - a staple and usually served with cou cou. A parting tidbit on your excursion will be a local dessert or sweet treat. Your last stop is by the wharf where you can surround yourself with Barbados' magic.
This day will give you an understanding of the rich history of Barbados and an appreciation for the many wonderful flavors of its food. You can make your way back to the ship at your leisure.
