Give back to the local community and see a few local sites at the same time with this excursion. Greenfield Children's Orphanage is run by Sandy Bay Lighthouse Ministries which is a non-profit, non-denominational organization that provides a loving, safe shelter for at-risk children as well as a quality bilingual education to prepare the children for a better future. On your way home, you will make a quick stop in Spanish Town to take pictures, and after leaving you will visit West End to see the beach, as well as sample local coffee and chocolates. You will spend about two hours at the home; which will include meeting the children, a short devotional, and a chance to even play a game of soccer, one of their favorite pastimes.
A current needs list can be found at this link Current Needs. If you are considering an In-Kind donation for the children they suggest an article of clothing rather than a toy, and toiletries rather than candy. Should you choose to bring any donation items from the U.S. be sure to "DECLARE" them on the ship the day before you are scheduled to arrive in Roatan. The cost of this excursion is to cover the transportation only; the home will graciously accept cash donations should you want to donate to their worthy cause.
You will meet your guide at a convenient location directly outside your Roatan cruise ship pier. They will lead you to your transportation. On the 35-minute ride to the Greenfield Children's Orphanage, you will make a quick photo stop at the Spanish Town viewpoint. Your guide will talk with you about the history and culture of Roatan.
When you arrive at the orphanage you will meet the directors, Orsy and Banesa Cruz, who are natives of Honduras. They are the "parents" of this big family. You will attend a program with the children, which includes a short devotional. You will learn about the way the home provides for them, as well as see the facilities. The children love to play soccer and will invite you to play a scrimmage with them! They enjoy interacting with the visitors that come to see them. They are appreciative of the time spent with them, playing or just talking to them about their interests, hopes, and dreams. The two hours will pass quickly, you will say your goodbyes, board your transportation, and head to West End Beach for a 30-minute stop.
Please note that the children are in school from February to October and cannot interact with guests. November to January is vacation time when they can visit with guests.
Once at West End Beach you will see the beautiful white sand beach and blue ocean water. Stick your toes in the water. Relax in the sand. You will also have the opportunity to try delicious locally made chocolates and sip on a hot cup of flavorful fresh brewed coffee at a local beachfront shop (food and drinks not included in the cost). Then you will go directly back to your cruise ship pier, your hearts full after spending your time giving back to the community of Roatan.
