    Meeting Point

    For this Costa Maya Lionfish Hunt SCUBA Dive and Tasting, you will meet after a short shuttle ride from your cruise pier. All details will be printed on your Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket.


    What is included?
    • Instructions and briefing explaining how to hunt the lionfish
    • 1 tank SCUBA dive
    • A "Hawaiian" sling - pole spear
    • Beach break with fresh lionfish tasting after the diving
    • Bottled water, soft drinks and fruit on the boat
    • NOTE-gear rental is available on site. Full set of equipment is $25.00 USD to be paid directly to the operator. Please make a note in customer comments when placing your order that you will need equipment or you may bring your own.
    Excursion Notes
      • Please download and print the following PADI SCUBA Dive Medical Statement (PDF document) and complete prior to participation. It is required that you bring this completed form and any other required notes or paperwork.
      • Please pay attention to restrictions and requirements for this excursion, no refund will be granted if requirements are not met.
      • We suggest you bring your swimsuit, towel, sun protection, cash for the shuttle, tips, other purchases, etc.
      • There is a minimum of 2 divers needed.
    Excursion Restrictions
    • You must present your current dive certification card with a minimum of 35 logged dives and your last dive within the past 8 months.
    • Minimum participation age is 15 years old.

    What is a lion fish and why is it hunted?
    It is an invasive fish that originates from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It escaped from a Miami aquarium after a tropical storm hit the building. It has no predators so it is destroying the reefs in the Caribbean. The only way to save the reefs is to "hunt" the lion fish.
    Are lion fish dangerous to humans?
    The lionfish is completely unaggressive and it’s impossible to be attacked by them. However, we need to be careful to not get stung by its spikes which can be VERY painful.
    Do I need to take my passport with me on the Costa Maya Lionfish Hunt SCUBA Dive and Tasting Excursion to show with my Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket?
    No, it is not necessary to take along your passport unless noted by your cruise line or listed in the Restrictions or Notes tab for the excursion. Your local operator has your booking noted. Please arrive with a printed copy of your eticket or digital copy if applicable.
    Cancellation

    For the Costa Maya Lionfish Hunt SCUBA Dive and Tasting Excursion, we issue full refund for your deposit or full payment to us if: Canceled by client prior to excursion date with a minimum of 48 hours prior notice by email to reservations@shoreexcursioneer.com.

    For cancellation reasons below, you must contact us via email within 14 days after your excursion:

    • Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
    • Your ship skips/misses the port.
    • Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
    • A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
    • Cancellations/deposit refund requests that do not comply with the above may not be subject to refund.
    • Refunds may be subject to a service charge fee as determined by the payment processor, please refer to Terms and Conditions for more information.

Absolutely recommend this for the experienced diver. Juan, dive master, was extremely attentive and made sure we each got to try to spear a lion fish. I usually don’t dive below 30 but he took us to 80 and I was comfortable with it. (Local Operator) outfit was amazing. The scuba gear was well maintained. They reviewed each of our dive logs to ensure we had enough dives.

This was so much fun! We had a great time diving and helping out by hunting the Lionfish. They ARE beautiful fish, but they are so destructive. We had a really good day and caught way more than we thought. The guys were really great about handling and cleaning the fish. They made fresh ceviche that was out of this world. We will make it a point to do this again and spread the word to others who travel and dive.

This was such an exciting tour and we are so glad that we made our reservations. It's hard deciding what the best part of the tour is because it was all good. It was an exciting dive to be on the hunt and felt good to be helping out mother nature a little. And then we got to eat them! You would never know that they tasted so good.
