Discover the Old City of Kotor with this walking excursion. You will stroll along the narrow streets and squares where you will admire its medieval architecture. One of your stops will be the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. You will also visit the Maritime Museum to learn the maritime history of the Gulf of Kotor.
You will meet at your Kotor cruise terminal to start your slow paced, walking exploration with your friendly guide. The Old City of Kotor is located on the only natural fjord of its kind and the bay is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. While there is no accurate information regarding the founding of Kotor, it is believed that the roots of Kotor stretch back before Homer (10 - 12 BCE), a time when Phoenicians ruled the Mediterranean.
Your guide will lead you along the streets and squares and tell stories about the city traders and famous sailors that once arrive to the city. As you weave back and forth among the buildings, you will notice immediately that the city was built like a maze and it was done for protective purposes. Strolling through the city, you will admire the medieval architecture and numerous monuments that harmonize with the landscape and has made Kotor a UNESCO World Natural and Historical Heritage Site.
As you continue walking, you will notice one building that stands out on the landscape, the Cathedral of St. Tryphon (Sveti Tripun), a monument of the Roman culture built in the 12th century. The cathedral is well known because of its big treasury but also because is one of the oldest in Europe. You will admire frescoes from the 14th century, various Gothic sculptures, marble altars, as well as some famous work of Kotor housewives which were made in the technique of Doborta embroidery. Your entrance fee into the cathedral is included - no waiting in long lines, you get to skip to the front! You will have approximately 25 minutes inside.
Continuing down the Square of the Boka Fleet, you will find your next stop, the Maritime Museum. Located in the baroque palace of the noble Grgurina family, the museum started its collection around 1880 and it was founded by the "Boka Marine" Fraternity. On the three floors are displayed exhibits connected with the maritime past of the Bay of Kotor such as models of ships, portraits of famous sea captains, old nautical instruments, antique furniture, old weapons and many more interesting artifacts. The entrance fee into the Maritime Museum is included. The guided visit takes approximately 20 minutes.
Your guide would walk you back to your Kotor cruise port, where you can continue exploring on your own or return to your cruise ship.
