Continuing your adventure, you will move to Herculaneum, another UNESCO World Heritage Site! Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, it was also destroyed by the eruption in 79 AD. Compared to Pompeii, Herculaneum was a more prosperous town. The most famous of its villas - Villa of the Papyri - is named after its library full of scrolls (papyri). Its architecture is exquisite, having been restored to its original state! Although tourism and vandalism resulted in quite a bit of damage, recent reconstruction has been very successful! In Pompeii, excavations are no longer permitted, but the largest collection to date of Greek and Roman sculptures has been uncovered along with frescoes and bronzes.
Your final stop is Mount Vesuvius! Its eruption in 79 AD was not its first by any means and it is not its last; there have been many since! With its last major eruption occurring in 1944, it is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the large population living nearby. The summit of Vesuvius is accessible to visitors by a spiral walkway that winds up to the crater. The surrounding area has been designated as a national park.
