Get to know the highlights of the Grand Canary Island with an excursion to see the natural monument of Las Palmas Bandama, the volcanic High Peaks, and the volcanic rock formation of Roque Nublo.
You'll meet your guide at a point across from your Las Palmas Gran Canaria cruise terminal. You'll be driven in air-conditioned comfort to the Bandama Volcano. This caldera (a large cauldron-like crater formed by a volcano) contains volcanic ash of different colors at its bottom. Have your camera ready to capture the amazing landscape!
You'll then drive to the quaint village of San Mateo where you'll have a 30-minute stop. This picturesque little town with its white buildings and red roofs is nestled in the mountainous central part of the island. You can visit the farmers market with its colorful fruit and vegetable stands (only open on Saturdays). You'll continue your drive to the Summit of Gran Canaria - "Pico de las Nieves" - considered to be the highest peak on the island at over 6400 feet elevation (1959 meters). From here, weather permitting, you'll have amazing views of the island. The peak has a military base with a large radar that you'll be able to see above you from the viewing platform. You can see Tenerife in the distance, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands and its towering Mt. Teide, a dormant volcano and the tallest of Spain's mountains.
Your next stop is the large volcanic basalt rock monolith, Roque Nublo. Considered the world's tallest crag, it was formed approximately 4.5 million years ago; it is located almost 6000 feet (1,813 meters) above sea level and is 220 feet (67 meters) tall. You'll continue to the little village of Tejeda, home to the Cruz de Tejeda, a huge stone cross situated in the center of town. You'll be able to sample locally produced goods like cheeses, honey, and fruits during your stop.
The last stop is in Teror, a small town situated in the northern mountains and an important pilgrimage destination after shepherds saw an apparition of Mary in the 1400s. The town center is well preserved and protected by the government. You can take a look at the Basilique of Lady of the Pine constructed in the 18th century with ornate interior architecture and fronting a bustling square. Lunch is not included but you're welcome to purchase at one of the cafes or restaurants that the guide is happy to recommend.
You will be returned to your Las Palmas Gran Canaria cruise pier at the end of your experience.
