See the best highlights on the southern side of the island while learning about the history and culture of Bonaire. Lots of photo ops so bring your camera.
You'll meet outside your Bonaire cruise ship port and board an air-conditioned van or car for your excursion of the island. Your native guide will show you the sights while filling you in on the history of Bonaire, called the Caribbean Netherlands; you can see the Dutch influence around the island.
You'll start with a drive along Kaya Grandi, the main street in downtown Kralendijk, with its colorful Caribbean architecture. There are still many of the original buildings, built in the late 1800s, that housed families upstairs and shops on the street level. The street is filled with a variety of stores and restaurants selling items like souvenirs, perfumes, and ice cream.
On the way to the south side of the island, you'll pass the Flamingo International Airport with its beautiful pink stone construction. Drive by the vibrant light and dark blues of the Caribbean on one side and the pink salt pools on the other. You'll see pyramids of processed salt lined up, and changing size depending on the season, at the largest solar salt facility in the Caribbean. The salt ponds attract different types of algae who in turn give the ponds their unique color. This solar salt facility houses the largest pink flamingo sanctuary in North America. Eating the algae is what gives the flamingoes their distinct pink colors. You'll have a 5 minute stop to get some great photos. Near the salt mine, you'll pass the slave huts. Constructed during the time of slavery in 1850 they were used by slaves working in the salt ponds. They slept there during the week and on the weekends walked 7 hours into the town to be with their families.
Along the route, keep your eyes peeled for the island's famous wild donkeys!
There are 3 lighthouses on the island, and you'll be passing the one at the very south end, the Spelank Lighthouse, now closed but serving as the South Shore's sole sign of life. This area is popular for snorkelers and divers. The last stop is Sorobon Beach. This white sand beach is located on the eastern shore and has some of the world's best windsurfing due to the warm shallow water and steady trade winds. A reef that sits offshore keeps the water here calm. The natural salt bath has also made it a great wellness destination.
You'll make a quick photo stop at the beach and then it is time to return to your Bonaire cruise terminal. This excursion of the south side of Bonaire is full of history and fantastic landscapes, don't forget your camera and enjoy!
